As a partner in Legacy Constructors, Layton completed construction of the Nauvoo Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The original Nauvoo Temple, said to be the finest building in the West in the 1840s, was extensively damaged by an arsonist’s fire in 1848 and destroyed by a tornado in 1850.

The new temple is a replica of the old, with the highest quality of finishes. Both the exterior and interior of the temple reflect the period and design of the original building. The exterior limestone blocks were tooled to match the pattern found on the stone of the original building.

"The new building will stand as a memorial to those who built the first such structure," said LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley.
