Deseret News, Utah’s oldest daily newspaper, contracted with Layton to demolish an old building and build a new 10-story office building in downtown Salt Lake City. Demolition of the existing building and construction for the new building took place next to an 80-year-old building protected by the Utah State Historical Society.

A very limited staging area presented Layton with unique challenges. For instance, with no place to store construction materials, everything had to be delivered the day it was to be used.

Some unique features of the facility include the radius stairway, the moment weld steel structure and the 1,500 sf per level, which was constructed to cantilever over the alley.

Completed: May 1997

Size: 120,000 sf

Owner: Deseret News Corporation

Location: Salt Lake City, UT
