Built in 1903, the original Spori building was one of the first buildings on campus. After it was destroyed in a fire, Layton built a new Spori building to replicate the original. The new Spori building is an educational facility that represents the past but also looks to the future.
The new building has four floors of classrooms, lecture auditoriums, studios, a newspaper room and an art gallery for art and communications classes. The upper levels house offices for the art and communications departments.
Layton used innovative measures to ensure that the quality of the new building matched the original--high-end finishes were important to the client. A new quarry was located and opened to match the original stone, walnut travertine. Layton utilized the same subcontractors performing finishing work in other buildings at the college to ensure a cohesive interior look throughout the campus.
Layton worked closely with the owner in the building process, the first contractor on campus to take this partnering approach. Layton made an effort to build the replacement building with exactness. |
