A kickoff event was held on Nov. 5, 2010 celebrating the start of construction on the first phase of the Salt Lake Regional Athletic Complex, which will be constructed by Layton Construction. City and county officials, Real Salt Lake players and financial donors kicked ceremonial gold soccer balls into nets at the project site to commemorate the occasion. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of 2011.
The complex, located on a 160-acre site, will include 15 competition-quality soccer fields, one championship field, seven lighted fields, more than 600 trees, administration and maintenance facilities and a Nature Preserve along the riparian corridor of the Jordan River.
To preserve the natural habitat surrounding the project's site, the lighted fields will use special lights that are designed to minimize impact to wildlife. Additionally, all water used onsite will be recaptured and reused so none of it will end up in the Jordan River.
Voters approved a $15 million bond for the sports complex in 2003, and Dave Checketts, founder and owner of Real Salt Lake, contributed an additional $7.5 million in order to move the project forward.
"Giving our youth a place for their dreams to play out was all the inspiration we needed," Checketts said about his decision to contribute the funds at the kickoff event. "I do believe that we will have kids playing for Real Salt Lake that have grown up here in the not too distant future."
