The new Seton Medical Center Harker Heights--the first new hospital in Bell County, Texas in more than 35 years--officially started accepting patients on June 18, 2012. Layton Construction Co., Inc. was the general contractor for the project and completed the new medical center in just 14 months.
The 200,000-square-foot, three-story hospital includes 83 beds, all private patient rooms, a full-service, 24/7 emergency department, women's services, obstetrics, cardiology, surgery, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, imaging and diagnostic services, general medical and surgical services, and intensive and critical care.
Ground was broken on the hospital in March 2011, and work was completed using an extremely fast tracked schedule.
"An aggressive schedule of this magnitude required innovative supervision and skilled craft workers," Jason Adams, Layton's construction manager for the project, said. "The Central Texas area is fortunate to have a strong workforce and each person that worked on our site understood our completion goal and dedicated themselves to helping us achieve it."
The hospital was also built to easily accommodate future expansion. Electrical gear, chillers, generators, medical gas distribution and other components were sized and installed to allow for future expansion.
The project is anticipated to benefit the Harker Heights community on several levels. The hospital is projected to create 2,000 jobs by the year 2022. In addition, the hospital is expected to have a total economic impact of $1.5 billion over a 10-year period.
