A $25 million expansion project to West Park Hospital in Cody, Wyo. wrapped up last week, with an open house held on June 4 and the addition officially opening for patients on June 6. The expansion includes 110,000 square feet of new and renovated space and is home to a new hospital entrance, emergency room, radiology and laboratory departments, patient financial services, chapel and gift shop.
Layton Construction Co., Inc. was the contractor for the project, which was completed on time and $1.2 million under budget. The project was completed on an extremely tight site, leaving virtually no room for laydown or staging areas. To ensure materials were on site when needed, Layton utilized lean construction techniques including just-in-time deliveries and the use of pre-manufactured materials.
One of the most important aspects of the expansion is the new emergency room. The ER's new location is up front and easy to find and is located next to the radiology and laboratory departments, which doctors routinely rely on to treat patients quickly. Additionally, the new ER has increased its patient capacity from six beds in shared rooms to 10-14 beds in private rooms and a trauma center, making it possible for 12,000 patients to be served each year. The ER also includes an isolation room for patients with communicable diseases and a "safe room" for patients who may pose a danger to themselves or others.
The expansion was designed to enhance patient comfort and includes separate public and patient hallways. Gardens, natural light throughout the facility, local artwork and the use of colors were also carefully chosen to add to patients' senses of well-being.
