Layton Breaks Ground on J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center

Ground was broken for a new high-quality, multi-purpose recreation center in the rapidly growing city of Herriman, Utah on June 11, 2009. Layton Construction is the construction manager for the project and EDA Architects is the project architect. The facility will serve residents in the southwestern part of the Salt Lake valley, namely the cities of Herriman, Bluffdale and Riverton.

The new 110,000-square-foot recreation center is being funded with $24.5 million from Salt Lake County and the Zoo, Arts and Parks Board, along with $2.5 million each from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation and Rosecrest, the master-planned community developed by the Foundation. Because of the Sorenson Legacy Foundation's generous donation of not only funding but also land, the official name of the facility is the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center. It will be located in the heart of the Herriman Towne Center development, currently under construction, and will eventually be adjacent to an elementary school and planned full-service Salt Lake County library.

In addition to a competition-size indoor swimming pool and indoor leisure pool with slides, a lazy river and water play equipment, the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center will include competition racquetball courts, an indoor walking/running track, two full-size basketball courts, exercise and fitness equipment, a dance and aerobics studio, a party/reception area and drop-in daycare.

The J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center will be constructed under the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System and will be the first LEED Platinum certified recreation center in the state of Utah. The project is anticipated to be complete in December 2010.
