Layton Completes Third Floor Vertical Expansion to College Station Medical Center

April 15, 2011

Progress at Layton Construction's College Station Medical Center Expansion project in College Station, Texas is successfully moving along and reached a major landmark last week. The third floor vertical expansion officially passed state inspection on April 14, 2011, marking the largest and most significant milestone for the multi-phased project.

The majority of work on the project involves expanding the medical center's Women's Pavilion. Crews added 30,000 square feet of space vertically above the hospital's existing two-level tower. The new third level will house 34 antepartum rooms and a nursery to provide care for 25 newborns. Steel erection for the vertical expansion began on Aug. 9, 2010 and was completed on April 14, 2011, taking just eight months from start to finish, as planned.

Layton's partnership with the design team from Ascension Group Architects and the facility's director of plant operations, Frank Hartman, was instrumental in the timely completion of this phase of the project. The owner was very pleased with the completion and appearance of the expansion. With its completion, College Station Medical Center has commenced transition planning and training for occupancy in the next two to three weeks.

Layton also recently completed the renovation of 4,000 square feet of the hospital's surgical services in January 2011, including building out two new operating rooms on the medical center's main level in existing shell space. The space has been equipped with the latest surgical technology and is capable of handling heart surgeries, bringing the total number of operating rooms available in the medical center to eight.

Layton will continue with additional challenging renovations in other areas of the facility over the next seven months. Directly adjacent and connected to the vertical expansion, Layton will begin renovating the existing 19,000-square-foot third floor Women's Center in May 2011. This space will convert existing postpartum rooms to 13 private newborn intensive care unit (NICU) rooms, four additional labor and delivery rooms and four new antepartum rooms.

In addition to the third floor renovations, Layton will continue with a second and third phase of renovations to the hospital's Emergency Department (ED). Layton has already relocated a 4,000-square-foot lab from the ED to an adjacent medical office building. Renovation of the old lab space within the ED is currently under construction, and another 3,000 square feet of existing ED space will be renovated to provide 10 new examination rooms, two new nurse stations, finish upgrades and support spaces.

All phases of the College Station Medical Center Expansion project are expected to be complete in December 2011.
