Work is currently underway on the new Cigna Phoenix Central Multi-Specialty Center in Phoenix, Ariz. Layton Construction Co., Inc. is the construction manager for the project, which broke ground in late 2011. The project is being developed by Clarius Partners, with Orcutt | Winslow providing the building's design.
The new three-story, 93,000-square-foot medical office building replaces Cigna's Clyde Wright Center, which opened in 1982. The central location of the new facility makes it very convenient for Cigna's customers, as the building is easily accessible to downtown Phoenix, SkyHarbor International Airport, the light rail system and Phoenix's major freeways. The new facility will provide services including outpatient surgery, family practice and urgent care.
Designed with a focus on sustainability measures, the building is seeking a LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council® but may earn enough points to qualify for a LEED Gold certification. More than 14,000 tons of concrete rubble from the demolition of an old building on the project site has been crushed and reused on site, and crews salvaged all of the steel and rebar from demolition. Bike racks and showers will be installed at the new facility and there will be designated parking for alternative fuel vehicles. The facility includes low-e glazing, a central plant mechanical system that exceeds Estimated Energy Requirements (EER) and a solar powered photovoltaic array system located on 104 stalls of parking canopies.
Work on the project is moving along quickly--the concrete tilt-up walls of the three-story facility are complete and standing and structural steel is 75 percent complete. The facility is being constructed using a highly fast tracked process and is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2012.
