Layton Construction Company Breaks Ground on Karen H. Huntsman Library at Snow College

EPHRAIM, Utah (Feb. 5, 2009) – A groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this week for the new Karen H. Huntsman Library at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. Layton Construction is the general contractor for the project and Cooper Roberts Simonsen Associates is the architect.

The 55,000-square-foot, four-story library will help ground the historic quadrant at the west end of Snow College's campus and has been designed architecturally to blend in seamlessly with the historical buildings it will be located near, also helping to tie together a founder's plaza that is planned between the new library and the historic Noyes building that dates back to 1908.

A critical element of the facility will be the incorporation of an advanced technology infrastructure to support the Internet age--much of the library's content is now online. The Karen H. Huntsman Library will have wireless access throughout the facility and in addition to traditional library materials such as books and microforms, will include lots of tables, wide spaces and plenty of natural light, flexible space with furnishings that allow rooms to be easily reconfigured, several study rooms and extended-hour study areas, a cafe/food services area and a 200-seat auditorium with state of the art instructional resources.

The Karen H. Huntsman Library has been designed with the intent of achieving a LEED Silver rating from the United States Green Building Council. Upon completion, it will be the first LEED-certified high performance green building in central Utah.

Layton has completed two projects for Snow College in the recent past. Layton completed the George S. & Dolores Dore Eccles Performing Arts Center in 2003, which received an Excellence in Concrete Award from the American Concrete Institute, and that same year also completed a remodel of the Snow College Business Education Building.

The Karen H. Huntsman Library is anticipated to be complete in August of 2010.
